All of our Archview Grads are adorable, but Ollie is easily one who melts our heart every time we get an update photo. In today’s Feature Friday post, Ollie’s mom Teresa P. from Texas shares her experience with Archview and all about Ollie!

Why did you choose an Australian Labradoodle?

“We did a lot of research on Australian Labradoodles. We loved their personality, temperament and that they have such a sweet disposition. They are loyal and people-pleasers. We hit the jackpot with this guy. There has never been a time of regret. He is part of our family.”

How did you know that Archview Labradoodles was the right breeder for your family?

“We did a lot of research before choosing Archview. We loved the fact that all the dogs lived with loving families and were ‘pets’ first and used for breeding second. I reached out and had many questions. My questions were always answered promptly. I also appreciated that Archview also asked me questions. They care where their pups are going. “

What do you love most about your Archview Labradoodle?

“Is it fair to say we love everything about our Ollie? He is the most lovable, sweetest joy!”

In part one on this blog series about the dangers of Parvo and Distemper, we outlined the symptoms and ways to protect your pooch from these dangerous diseases. In today’s blog, we discuss what we do to protect your pup before they ever join your home!

Prevention is Key

Many people turn to online blogs and education sources when shopping for a pet, especially online. We totally and 100% agree that you should thoroughly do your research before investing in a forever family friend! Unfortunately, many of these blogs make a suggestion that can be fatal: they encourage you to only shop from breeders who allow you to visit.

With Parvo and Distemper at all-time highs in our area, this is a risk we just cannot take. At any given time we can have one or two litters of young, at-risk, un-vaccinated babies at our home. All it could take is one unfortunate accident to bring these diseases into our homes and make our puppies deathly ill.

For that reason, we only allow home visits from approved adopters who have a deposit on a puppy. These visits are scheduled AFTER the puppies have received their first vaccinations at seven weeks of age. We provide all of our adopters with several bio-security guidelines to follow prior to their visit, such as not coming from a pet store or dog park before entering our home.

“But I Want to See Your Facility!”

We get it; the fear of puppy mills is a definite concern when investing in a puppy. 99% of the time when people want to visit our facility and see our dogs, they truly have good intentions! The risk is just too great, however, to allow multiple visitors. With that being said, we offer a TON of additional options to help you feel at peace with your decision to adopt from Archview!

Louie’s owner, Claudia M. of Missouri, recently shared with us that she can’t imagine her world with her beloved Archview Labradoodle. We love this little family, and knew that we had to feature them in this month’s Feature Friday post!

Why did you choose an Australian Labradoodle?

“In the past, I had been a pet-sitter for an Australian Labradoodle. That experience showed me just how loving and smart the breed is. In addition to being highly intelligent and compassionate pets, I was excited to discover a breed that was either low shedding or no shedding. From that moment on, I decided that, when the timing was right, I would bring home my own special Labradoodle pup.”

How did you know that Archview Labradoodles was the right breeder for your family?

“I had done extensive research of different Labradoodle breeders in the Midwest and South. A good friend highly recommended that I check out Archview and I’m so grateful that I did! Right away, I could tell that Archview was very knowledgeable about breeding their sires and dams. They also appealed to me with their thorough adoption process. In fact, I was able to visit Louie and one of his littermates a couple weeks prior to bringing him home to make sure that we were a good fit for one another. I was also appreciative of Archview working with my schedule to find the perfect time for me to bring my boy home.”

What do you love most about your Archview Labradoodle?

“I love how loyal Louie is with me and how well he listens. He is always showing me how happy he is that I’m his mama. It also brings me a lot of joy to see how outgoing he is with other humans and dogs. He has never met a stranger and has quickly become best friends with the kids and dogs in our neighborhood. I’m looking forward to enrolling Louie in therapy dog classes later this year so that he can bring happiness to even more people!”

What are your favorite things to do with your Archview Labradoodle?

“Louie and I love to go on walks together! We also enjoy off leash time at our local dog park and have been on a couple hikes. Louie also has fun going for rides with me, especially when the final destination is PetSmart!”

Louie is a big fan of his daily Greenie! He also has been enjoying Frosty Paws dog ice cream as a treat while it’s still hot out.

One of the most critical parts of our duties as breeders is ensuring the health and well-being of our dogs and puppies. We have enacted many bio-security policies to prevent the spread of harmful diseases. To better help you understand some of our regulations regarding visitors and more, we thought we would kick off a two-part blog with an in-depth explanation of two devastating diseases: Parvo and Distemper.

Canine Parvovirus

PetMD best summarized this description of what we commonly know as Parvo:

The canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs. The virus manifests itself in two different forms.
 
The more common form is the intestinal form, which is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of appetite (anorexia). The less common form is the cardiac form, which attacks the heart muscles of fetuses and very young puppies, often leading to death.
 
The majority of cases are seen in puppies that are between six weeks and six months old.

As you can see, the biggest concern relating to Parvo is its ability to attack the systems of young puppies. Parvo is extremely easy to pass along, with cases being reported of owners bringing the virus home on the bottom of their shoes. And the scariest part? There are studies showing that it is possible for the virus to live in the soil for long periods of time, even up to one year.

If you are local to the St. Louis area like we are, it is important to note that our local veterinarians are reporting high rates of Parvovirus currently. We will discuss what you can do to prevent the spread of this disease to your furry friends later on.

Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems in dogs. Like Parvo, Distemper is highly contagious and can be passed along from dog to dog through direct contact. Coughing, sneezing, or the touching of another dogs urine, blood or saliva can all lead to spread of this deadly disease.

Puppies and young adolescent dogs who are not vaccinated are at the highest of contracting Distemper. Young puppies who come in contact with Distemper are in grave danger. The virus will hit their systems rampantly and travel to the brain, leading to seizures and a severely weakened immune system.

Puppies cannot receive their first Distemper vaccination until they are six to eight weeks of age. As you can imagine, this leaves our newborn puppies extremely susceptible to this deadly disease.

Signs and Symtoms

The key to life-saving measures when it comes to these two viruses is quick diagnosis and treatment. Here are some signs to watch for:

Parvo

• Severe, bloody diarrhea
• Lethargy
• Anorexia
• Fever
• Vomiting
• Severe weight loss

Dystemper

• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Thick mucus discharge from the eyes and nose
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Sudden vomiting or diarrhea
• Loss of appetite

How to Keep Your Puppy Safe

The most important thing is to vaccinate your puppy, however, puppies are not able to get started on the Parvo or Distemper shots until they are six weeks of age. Both vaccines are a series of shots which are not entirely effective until the course of vaccinations have been finalized.

All Archview puppies leave for their new homes up-to-date on all age-appropriate vaccines, but it is up to you as their new caregiver to ensure they stay on the proper vaccination protocol. Your Veterinarian will help you schedule all of the appropriate shots at the right time.

In the mean time, here are some tips and tricks to prevent the accidental spread of these deadly diseases:

• Do not visit or take your new puppy to places with high dog traffic such as pet stores, dog parks, etc.
• If you or your pet must visit these places, pick your pet up and do not let them walk on the ground. Leave the shoes you wore in these places outside or out of reach from your puppy. Even them chewing on your shoes if they came in contact with Parvo can be deadly.
• Follow routine sanitation practices at home. Get in the routine of cleaning your puppy’s kennel frequently, pick up all fecal matter around the yard, and always wash your hands after interacting with an unknown dog before petting your dog.

Now that you are a little more familiar with these diseases, it will be easier to understand some of our bio-security policies at Archview. Stay tuned for blog number two!

A recent article released by the Washington Post quoted Wally Conran, the mastermind behind the first Labradoodle, as saying that he created “Frankenstein’s monster” when he introduced the world to the then cross-breed. To the uneducated eye, this article might seem like a slight towards the now prominent breed that Conran himself had a hand in creating, but to those of us who love and are passionate about the breed we see it for what it really is.

Wally Conran created the Labradoodle in an effort to provide a service dog to someone with a dog allergy. Rutland Manner and Teagan Park of Australia saw great merit in Conran’s work and began their efforts on perfecting on the right “recipe” to improve Conran’s original idea. The result was the Australian Labradoodle; a keenly intelligent, allergy-friendly family pet. Unfortunately, the downfall of the credibility of the “Labradoodle” is a direct result of the surge of backyard breeders who sought a path to easy money. Those breeders are the true culprit behind the “monster” Conran was referring to.

The differences between your garden variety Labradoodle and an Australian Labradoodle, however, are astronomical. In this week’s blog, we address many common misconceptions regarding “doodles” and how an ALAA Australian Labradoodle stands apart among the rest.

The Difference Between Backyard Doodles and Australian Labradoodles

Once the doodle-craze began, breeders from all over decided to capitalize on what they saw as an opportunity to make money. Rather than take into account the years of research, genetic-testing, and proper breeding practices that the Australian Labradoodle community stands by, the average backyard doodle breeder was just happy adding “doodle” to anything they could dream up.

So what was the result? Families adopting first-gen doodle crosses with the expectation of a low-shedding pet who were disappointed to find that, surprise, their pet still had a coat that shed. Health problems arose as low-quality dogs were bred time-after-time-after-time to meet quotas rather than improve the breed standard.

Oodles of Doodles

And you know what, we kind of understand where he is coming from.

Each day we encounter doodle breeders advertising their puppies online: goldendoodles, huskydoodles, schnoodles and more. Oodles upon oodles of doodles are falsely advertised online, leading to one common misconception: was the labradoodle a mistake?

Like babies, puppies grow and change each day so cherish the baby days while they are around! As your puppy works their way through the maturation process, you may notice a few unusual behaviors or habits they pick up. We picked a handful of topics to address in this week’s Whats Up With My Pup? check-in.

Why Does My Puppy Sleep ALL the Time?

Its a ruff life being a pup, especially when you have a whole new world with your family to explore. Don’t be surprised if your pooch nods off every now and then for a little nap… or two… or three. It is perfectly normal for your new four-legged friend to nap frequently throughout the day while they are young.

DID YOU KNOW? It is not abnormal for puppies to sleep 15-20 hours a day! One minute your pup might be bouncing off the walls and the next he/she is out cold. This is normal behavior and we encourage you to allow your new friend to get all the rest they need during the day. As the evening grows closer, however, we recommend you keep your puppy awake and engaged with lots of games so they will sleep happily through the night.

Why Does My Puppy Eat Like That?

Puppies are funny creatures, especially at mealtime! Don’t be surprised if breakfast or dinner is the most exciting part of your pup’s day, they need all of that nutrition to fuel their never-ending source of puppy energy! Meal time can bring out some unusual behaviors, however, like picking one kibble up at a time to eat.

It is not uncommon for your pooch to grab a kibble or two, carry it to another spot, munch away, and then return to his/her bowl and repeat the process all over again. But WHY do they do that?

While there is no hard and fast answer, there are lots of theories as to why certain dogs develop this behavior. Most people claim it traces back to the dog’s ancestral history of living in a pack. In the wild, when a wolf or coyote harvests a meal, the smaller less dominate canines will drag a bit of the meal away and leave the larger part for the leader of the pack. This keeps them from engaging or fighting among one another.

So is your dog scared when eating? Probably not, although if you have other dogs we do suggest separating meal spaces while your pooch is small so they can eat their entire meal in peace. Most likely, this is just a habit ingrained in the minds of our dogs from their roots as wild animals. How interesting!

Why Does My Puppy Shake So Much?

As we mentioned earlier, moving to a new home can be exciting for your new pup, but it can also be a bit worrisome. Since dogs can’t verbally communicate with us, they have to tell us what they are thinking in other ways. Puppies who shake or tremble are a perfect example of non-verbal communication that can come across loud and clear.

If your puppy is stressed or nervous, it won’t be uncommon to find them trembling a bit. Your puppy is trying to relieve tension and to tell you that they may need a little comforting. Talk to them softly and comfort them by gently petting them. Most of us want to hug and coddle our puppies, but studies actually show that most dogs don’t enjoy hugs, so maybe keep the affection gentle until your puppy gets to know you better.

Your puppy may also shake if he/she is cold, wet, or sick. If your puppy is shaking in excess, it is time to consult with your licensed veterinarian to make sure they are a-okay!
